Rounding the Bottom of the World

The Cape Horn voyage is South America’s signature cruise. It links the Atlantic and Pacific around the tip of the continent, threading the Strait of Magellan, the Beagle Channel and the Chilean fjords, and it is one of the great scenic sea routes anywhere.

Most sailings run one way between Buenos Aires in Argentina and the Santiago area of Chile, where ships use San Antonio or Valparaíso. A typical 14- to 17-night itinerary calls at Montevideo, Puerto Madryn on the Patagonian coast, Stanley in the Falkland Islands, Ushuaia, Punta Arenas and Puerto Montt, with scenic cruising past glaciers and through narrow channels in between. Princess Cruises’ 2026–27 Cape Horn & Glaciers of Patagonia sailings, for example, add scenic cruising through the Beagle Channel’s “Glacier Alley.”

A Typical Route, Port by Port

StopCountryWhat it is known for
Buenos AiresArgentinaTango, grand avenues, steakhouses and the Recoleta district; often an overnight
MontevideoUruguayAn easy-going capital on the Río de la Plata, with an old town and a long waterfront
Puerto MadrynArgentinaGateway to Península Valdés and Punta Tombo, known for penguins and marine wildlife in season
StanleyFalkland IslandsA small British-run capital and nearby penguin colonies; tender port, weather permitting
UshuaiaArgentinaThe world’s southernmost city, Tierra del Fuego National Park and Beagle Channel boat trips
Punta ArenasChileA Strait of Magellan port with access to penguin islands and, on long excursions, Torres del Paine
Puerto MonttChileLakes, volcanoes and the German-influenced towns of Chile’s Lake District
San Antonio / ValparaísoChileThe sea gateways for Santiago, and Valparaíso’s colorful hillside neighborhoods

Shore tours for each of these stops are covered in depth on our Cape Horn and Patagonia port guide, including Ushuaia, Punta Arenas and Puerto Madryn.

The Scenic Days Are the Highlight

Glacier front in Patagonia
Tidewater glaciers line the channels of southern Chile.

On a Cape Horn cruise, some of the best hours are spent on deck rather than ashore. Ships cruise slowly through the Chilean fjords and the Strait of Magellan, past hanging glaciers, forested islands and peaks that rise straight out of the water. A cabin with a balcony, or at least a plan for a good spot on an open deck, is worth thinking about early.

The weather is part of the experience. Days can bring sunshine, sleet and strong wind within hours, and the seas around the cape and the Drake Passage approaches can be lively. Pack waterproof layers, a warm hat and gloves even in January.

Adding Antarctica

Some Cape Horn itineraries add scenic cruising in Antarctic waters, usually with three or four days in the region. Large ships cannot land passengers in Antarctica; under the rules followed for Antarctic tourism, ships carrying more than 500 passengers may not put guests ashore. If stepping onto the continent matters to you, look at a small expedition ship from Ushuaia instead. Our sister site A Voyage Travel explains how expedition voyages work.

Cape Horn Questions

Do cruise ships actually sail around Cape Horn?

Many Cape Horn itineraries include scenic cruising near the cape when weather and sea conditions allow. Rounding it is never guaranteed: the captain decides on the day, and a rough sea can mean the ship passes at a distance or skips the approach.

Which direction is better, Buenos Aires to Chile or Chile to Buenos Aires?

Both see the same core sights. Ending in Buenos Aires lets you finish with a city stay; starting there gives you time in Buenos Aires before you sail. Compare flight times and prices for each direction before choosing.

Are the Falkland Islands always included?

Many itineraries call at Stanley, but ships anchor and use tenders there, so a call can be cancelled in high wind. Treat it as a hoped-for stop rather than a certainty.
